Here?s a look at two supermassive black holes spiraling toward a collision. In this supercomputer simulation, three regions of light-emitting gas glow as the black holes merge, all connected by streams of hot gas. The disks and streams of gas produce a ton of UV light and X-rays. There?s an empty circle between the two black holes that wasn?t modeled in this version of the simulation because it needed more processing power ? this version took the Blue Waters supercomputer 46 days on 9,600 computing cores!
